Filtering light, photosynthesis?

When we have an experiment and we say that the green light is filtered (i. E by placing green paper around a tube) does this mean that all of the green light doesnt get through to the specimen in the tube or does it mean that all light wavelengths are turned to green? Also does anyone know how the 'inverse square law'applies to plants in the wild? Thanks.
