Why are Republicans trying to limit BP's liability?

The Dems are trying to raise the oil company liability cap from $750 million to $10 billion, but the Republicans are blocking it. So let me get this straight -- if I bump my neighbor's car, I have to pay, but if BP destroys my beach they don't? Is there any time in recent history when the Republicans have put the interests of the American people ahead of those of greedy corporations?
