FEMA Closely Monitoring Midwest Earthquake and Aftershocks

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is working with state and local officials to identify the potential need for federal assistance as a result of the 5.2 magnitude earthquake that struck near Mt. Carmel, Ill ., this morning. FEMA also is working closely with its federal partners to support the efforts of state and local emergency managers in the affected states as needed.

FEMA continues to monitor the effects of the earthquake and its aftershocks. Citizens in the impacted area should be prepared for certain hazards and possible evacuations in the event their homes or businesses are damaged and unsafe for reentry. Residents should listen for emergency messages from state and local officials and be cautious driving through the area as roads and buildings may have sustained damage from the temblor. Individuals not immediately in the impacted area avoid entering the impacted area if possible. For more information on what citizens can do to protect themselves and others following an earthquake:

Specifically, FEMA has undertaken the following actions to manage state and local need for federal assistance:

The NRCC has facilitated planning and situational awareness video teleconferences between FEMA headquarters and regions, and other federal and state agencies.

FEMA Region IV

The Regional Response Coordination Center (RRCC) Watch Unit in Thomasville, Ga ., is monitoring the situation and will remain on duty until further notice.
FEMA state liaisons have reached out to counterparts at the Kentucky State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC). Regular contact is being maintained with liaisons and the RRCC Watch Unit.
FEMA Region V

The Region V RRCC in Chicago is monitoring the situation and will remain on duty until further notice.
A FEMA Region V liaison has been deployed to the Illinois SEOC.
