USDA Announces Open Teleconferencing Meeting of the Plant Variety Protection Board
WASHINGTON, April 21, 2008 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) will hold a teleconference meeting of the Plant Variety Protection (PVP) Board, on May 1, 2008. The meeting will be held in the AMS Conference Room, Room 3074, South Building, 1400 Independence Avenue, SW, Washington, D.C.
The meeting is open to the public. All prospective attendees planning to attend are required to register with the PVP Office at (301) 504-5518 before April 30.
The board consists of 14 individuals who are experts in various areas of varietal development. These individuals are appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture, and include representatives from the private or seed industry sector, the public or government sector and farmer representatives.
The board advises the secretary about the rules and regulations needed to facilitate proper administration of the PVP Act; makes advisory decisions on all appeals from the examiner and advises the secretary on questions related to section 44 of the PVP Act on public interest in wide usage of a protected variety.
The meeting notice and proposed agenda will be published in the April 21, 2008, Federal Register. Minutes of the meeting will be available for public review 30 days following the meeting and will be posted on the Web site, http://www.ams.usda.gov/PVPO.
AMS administers the PVP Act, which provides time-limited marketing protection to developers of new and distinct seed-reproduced and tuber-propagated plants ranging from farm crops to flowers.
