Hassmiller Award Supports Nurse Involvement in Disaster Response
Some men give their wives diamonds. Red Cross volunteer Susan Hassmiller received an award endowment instead.
Monday, June 09, 2008 — June 6 was a memorable day for Susan and Robert Hassmiller. They traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska, where Susan presented the first-ever Susan Hassmiller Nursing Award to the Cornhusker Chapter of the American Red Cross.
The Susan Hassmiller Nursing Award Endowment Fund was created in 2007 with initial donations from Susan’s husband, Robert Hassmiller, and other friends.
Susan Hassmiller, PhD, RN, FAAN, became a Red Cross volunteer when she was a student nurse in college. The endowment recognizes her long, dedicated Red Cross volunteer service and her significant contributions.
Since college Hassmiller has responded to countless local, national and international disasters. Time and again she has seen the devastation of tornadoes, floods and hurricanes. She has also served in the kinds of tragedies that one hopes to never see again: 9/11; Hurricane Katrina; and the Indonesian tsunami.
Her professionalism and tireless work as a disaster health services volunteer catapulted Hassmiller to the highest leadership positions in the organization. Notably, she was a member of the American Red Cross Board of Governors from 2001-2007.
The Hassmiller Nursing Award allows Susan to put into action her belief that the mission of the American Red Cross can be enhanced through the ongoing involvement of talented nurses in all aspects of front line service delivery, leadership and policymaking.
The first Hassmiller Award brings her kind of thinking to Nebraska. The award and accompanying grant make it possible for the Lincoln Red Cross chapter to offer an online workshop letting nurses know what happens within a community when a disaster hits and the role nurses have in the recovery process.
The workshop also seeks to inspire professional and student nurses to become Red Cross disaster health services volunteers. These new nurse volunteers have a real action hero on which to model their community service. That hero is Susan Hassmiller.
