Gutierrez Praises LULAC Support for Colombia FTA

WASHINGTON—U.S. Secretary of Commerce Carlos M. Gutierrez issued the following statement praising the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) for calling on Congress to schedule a vote on the U.S.-Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement.
“I congratulate the leadership and membership of LULAC for recognizing the significance of the U.S.-Colombia FTA. Colombia is a staunch defender of democracy, and an important American ally and friend. As one of the nation’s leading Hispanic organizations, LULAC has sent an important signal that this agreement is right for Americans and right for Colombians.
“Latino Americans—and all Americans—know that when Colombia is stronger, more secure and more prosperous, so is the Western Hemisphere.
“For decades the Colombian people have fought back against violence and terrorism, while staying true to democratic principles. The Colombian government’s successful rescue of hostages, including three Americans, serves to remind us of the importance of standing by Colombia, a proponent of democracy, human rights, and rule of law. The pending U.S.-Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement is the most significant way in which America can help Colombia solidify peace and prosperity.
“This FTA deserves a vote in the U.S. Congress. The FTA will not only level the playing field for American exporters, but help build legitimate economic opportunities that will encourage Colombians to continue to reject terrorism and violence, and seek prosperity and peace. LULAC got it right in supporting the U.S.-Colombia FTA. Now it’s time for Congress to get it right and give this historic trade agreement a vote.”
