Golden Girls Star Estelle Getty Dies At Age 84
Estelle Getty, who played the oldest of the "Golden Girls" (Sophia) died early Tuesday morning in her Hollywood home at age 84, three days before her 85th birthday.
Getty had roles in "Mask", "Stop or My Mom Will Shoot", "Tootsie" and voiced Grandma Estelle Little in "Stuart Little". She started her acting career in 1978 with Team-Mates and also had short roles in two critically acclaimed classics, Tootsie and Mask.
Estelle Getty was married to Arthur Gettleman from 1946 until his death in 2004. Getty had two sons: Carl Gettleman and Barry Gettleman.
Each of Getty's former Golden Girls co-stars reflected on her death: Rue McClanahan told the Associated Press, "Don't feel sad about her passing. She will always be with us in her crowning achievement, Sophia."
Bea Arthur said in a statement, "Our mother-daughter relationship was one of the greatest comic duos ever, and I will miss her." Betty White remarked, "The only comfort at this moment is that although Estelle has moved on, Sophia will always be with us."
