U.S. Senator Barack Obama to cosponsor the Americans with Disabilities Restoration Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Barack Obama joined Senators Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT) to cosponsor the Americans with Disabilities Restoration Act:

"With nearly 54 million Americans living with disabilities today, we have a responsibility to ensure they have better access, more opportunities, and increased independence.

"Enacting the Americans with Disabilities Act was a historic milestone when it was signed into law eighteen years ago, but we still have more to do. We must reaffirm our nation's commitment to those with disabilities by immediately passing legislation to reverse judicial decisions that permit discrimination against persons with disabilities.

"I am proud to support this legislation, and I commend Senators Harkin and Hatch for their leadership on behalf of Americans with disabilities."
