Table Tennis: China's men match women to win Team gold


China defeated Germany to win the gold medal in the Men's Team competition at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Table Tennis tournament.

Earlier in the day, The Republic of Korea took the bronze medal.

China's Wang Hao, Ma Lin and Wang Liqin gave a breathtaking performance as the No.1 seeds overcame the second-seeded Germans 3-0 in the final.

A day earlier, the Chinese women won Team gold without losing a single match, a feat repeated by the men.

Wang Hao opened proceedings with a straight-games win over Dimitrij Ovtcharov and Ma Lin followed suit to defeat Timo Boll. The German captured the second game to level matters but Ma Lin won the next two games.

China's victory was sealed when Wang Liqin partnered Wang Hao to victory over Boll and Christian Suss (GER) in straight games in the doubles to the delight of 7,500 fans in the Peking University Gymnasium.

Meanwhile, the Republic of Korea, seeded No.3, overcame No.8-seeded Austria to take the bronze.

ROK won 3-1, with Ryu Seung Min, the Men's Singles champion in the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, beaten by Robert Gardos (AUT) in the second match after Oh Sang Eun (KOR) recovered from an opening-game deficit to defeat Werner Schlager (AUT).

It was the fifth defeat of the tournament for Ryu but he had the last laugh, defeating Chen Weixing (AUT) in straight games to bring matters to an end after Oh Sang Eun and Yoon Jae Young (KOR) had won the doubles to give ROK a 2-1 lead.

Earlier in the day, the preliminary-round matches of the Women's Singles event went to form, with Fabiola Ramos of Venezuela recovering to beat Canadian Judy Long. The prelim also saw several outsider qualifiers such as Margaryta Pesotska of Ukraine, Eva Odorova of Slovakia and Andrea Bakula of Croatia beat their respective opponents in the 64 main draw to enter the Women’s Singles first round.

Yang Fen of Congo, the reigning African champion, needed six games to overcome Crystal Xi Huang of the United States
