Men's Water Polo: United States and Hungary advance to semifinals
The United States defeated Germany 8-7 in its last preliminary-round match on Monday to clinch top spot in group B and direct passage to the semifinals in the Men's Water Polo tournament being held at the Yingdong Natatorium.
They will be joined by group A winners Hungary in the semifinals on Friday, 22 August.
Croatia, who beat China 16-4, finished equal on points with the United States, but the Americans took top spot by virtue of their two-goal head-to-head victory.
Serbia looked unusually lethargic in its 13-12 loss to Italy and finished third with three wins.
Germany and Italy finished equal on points but the Germans took fourth spot by virtue of its 12-11 head-to-head win. Winless China was sixth.
In group A, Hungary stayed on track for a third successive Olympic gold medal by thumping Canada 12-3 to take first place. Winless Canada was sixth.
Spain finished second in the group with a 10-6 win over fifth-placed Greece, thanks to seven goals by Felipe Perrone.
The closest match was between European champions Montenegro and Oceania champions Australia, which finished in a 5-5 draw, edging Montenegro into third place in group. Australia, who lost two games by a goal, finished fourth, consigned to the 7-12 play-offs.
