USAID Statement Regarding Its Decision On Marie Stopes International

WASHINGTON D.C. - USAID supplies 54 countries with contraceptive commodities around the world. The decision as to which organizations deliver contraceptive commodities does not affect the supply. USAID continues to supply the same volume of commodities and does everything possible to ensure that our program objectives are accomplished through governments and various partners.

In six countries where USAID donates contraceptive commodities to governments, Marie Stopes International (MSI) is one of a number of entities that ultimately receives them. MSI is not currently receiving any direct funding from USAID.

MSI is the major implementer of the United Nations Population Fund’s (UNFPA) family planning program in China, which was found by the State Department, under Kemp-Kasten provisions, to support or participate in the management of a program of coercive abortion or involuntary sterilization. Given these circumstances, USAID informed governments in these countries that it does not want USAID-funded commodities to be provided to MSI.

USAID is working with governments in the affected countries to ensure that its commodities reach the women and men who need them.
