Orthodox Chief Rabbi Meets with Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem

JERUSALEM, ISRAEL - Chief Rabbi of Efrat, Shlomo Riskin, met with Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Fouad Twal for the first time since the Archbishop took the position in June of this year. Rabbi Riskin congratulated the Latin Patriarch on his new appointment and expressed the Jewish community's willingness to work with Catholic Church to foster better relations between the faiths to "promote a religion of peace."

Archbishop Twal expressed his delight that Rabbi Riskin opened the first Orthodox Jewish center to theologically dialogue with Christians and is looking forward in exploring ways that both Judaism and Christianity can work together. Rabbi Riskin mentioned to the Archbishop that The Center for Jewish Christian Understanding & Cooperation is based on Isaiah 1:18 - Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord. "We believe that only when we truly clarify our respective truths, faith commitments and ideals with honesty and clarity will we become fully empowered to embrace the other in a love completely devoid of fear. We are certain that through these relational dialogues we will find far more which unites us than divides us," Riskin said.

The meeting between the Rabbi Riskin and the Latin Patriarch was coordinated by Gary Krupp, founder and president of Pave the Way Foundation, an organization that bridges the gaps between religions. Krupp is organizing the first ever Lyon, France religious leaders mission to visit Israel in March of 2009. The group will be hosted both by the Latin Patriarch and Rabbi Riskin. "We are witnessing historic moments in faith history, where it was unheard of an Orthodox rabbi to sit down with an Archbishop a century ago are now finding ways to work together," Krupp stated.
