United Nations will commemorate the first World Day of Social Justice
The United Nations will commemorate the first World Day of Social Justice by convening an Interactive-Panel Discussion on 20 February from 10h15 to
13h00 in the Economic and Social Council Chamber at the UN.
The event, entitled “Social Justice for a Fair Globalization”, will delve into the complexities of the social contract and the essential need to respect all human rights and fundamental freedoms for the achievement of social justice. The discussion will also explore, at a practical level with employers’ and workers’ representatives, the importance of globalization and interdependence in opening new opportunities through trade, investment and capital flows for world economic growth to improve living standards around the world.
The event brings together key international policymakers, the diplomatic community, the UN system, civil society and others working with vulnerable communities to discuss the importance of social justice issues and to create dialogue for a better understanding of the parameters of social justice and the challenges in achieving a “society for all”.
The event will be opened by the Ms. Rachel Mayanja (Assistant Secretary-General of the UN’s Department of Economic and Social Affairs and Special Adviser of the Secretary-General on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women) where she will deliver the Secretary-General’s Message on the World Day of Social Justice. The panel discussion will be moderated by Eric Falt (Director, Outreach Division, UN’s Department of Public Information) with the following panellists:
