Largest service for accepting credit cards, Authorize.Net , offline due to fire

The entire Authorize.Net infrastructure, including backup solutions, crashed a few hours ago due to a fire at their datacenter in Seattle.

Authorize.net, reported via their newly created Twitter account at http://twitter.com/authorizenet :

"We are down due to a fire at our primary data center in Seattle. We are working to restore services, but no ETA at this time. We apologize for this disruption and ask for your patience as we work with the team at our datacenter to restore service. The backup data center was impacted too. Don't have info as to why. The team is solely focused on getting us back up for now."

Minutes ago, Authorize.net updated the current status to:

" Transactions are up except for Global processing and Concord. No ETA on those, but we are working on in. The Web site at www.authorize.net is not up yet. Access the merchant interface directly at https://account.authorize.net "

It's funny reading stories that the sprinklers caused the backup generators to fry. Stocks will go up for companies offering fire and water protected servers soon LOL

Paypal will be very happy about this. Merchants are already switching over.

Is a backup solution not in place to cover such problems? How can a company like Authorize.net fail to install a backup system that actually works? I would not wonder if the backup solution was hosted at the same data centre. Solution: Datacentres at different places.

This will lead to millions of Dollars lost for their merchants. This day will not be easily forgotten.
