Gay Christian Magazine Whosoever Wins 2009 Pride Choice Award

Whosoever: An Online Magazine for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) Christians has been named the best gay and lesbian focused nonprofit in the Southeast in GreatNonprofit's 2009 Pride Choice Awards (http://www.greatnonprofits.org/pride).

"This organization helped save my life by connecting me with safe GLBT Christians. I came out in the context of a fundamentalist Christian background and was treated like a criminal," wrote one reviewer, under the online name "sunflowers." "I also feel more equipped to respond to the rhetoric and fear of the fundamentalists now and am able to pray for the very people who wounded me in my past."

"Whosoever's entire mission has been to affirm GLBT people in their sexuality or gender identity and assure them of God's unconditional love for them," said Whosoever founder and editor Candace Chellew-Hodge. "It is gratifying to know that our mission is being fulfilled and we're honored by this recognition of our work."

Chellew-Hodge's work on the magazine has culminated in her latest book, Bulletproof Faith: A Spiritual Survival Guide for Gay and Lesbian Christians, published by Jossey-Bass (http://www.bulletproofbook.com). The book teaches LGBT people and their allies how to answer critics and live authentically into their sexual orientation or gender identity.

The contest, held during Gay and Lesbian Pride Month in June, asked people to submit reviews and ratings about nonprofits serving the LGBTQ community. The contest was sponsored by GreatNonprofits.org, GuideStar and Queerty.

Whosoever, founded in 1996, publishes new issues every other month and works to provide a safe and sacred space for LGBT Christians. Visit Whosoever on the Web at http://www.whosoever.org.

This magazine is designed to empower and embolden people to realize that God is greater than homophobic rhetoric and actions -- Rev. Dr. Jerry Maneker

Wanting a place to go that was a "safe" haven to worship and praise God, I found Whosoever Ministries. In this world, gays and lesbians where gays and lesbians seem to be marginalized, we stand alone most of the time. We are shunned by our parents, left out by our peers for our belief systems, and put down by co-workers when we say, "I am Christian too." Many say, what a strange dichotomy did you say Christian? Yes, gay and proud, and Christian too! Willing to stand up for our rights, and willing to die for the Lord. -- Candy Jacobson
