Electroconvulsive therapy-induced mania: a case report


IntroductionDespite its controversial history, electroconvulsive therapy is generally an effective treatment with few serious side effects. One rare but troublesome side effect of electroconvulsive therapy is mania.Case presentationA 33-year-old Turkish woman developed mania on three separate occasions after receiving electroconvulsive therapy for severe depressive episodes.

Conclusion: Patients who experience electroconvulsive therapy-related mania should be evaluated for alternative treatments when presenting with severe depression.

I'm so sick of ECT being described as a safe treatment. It's not. Go to Wikipedia and read the Adverse Effects section. Read the effectiveness section, too. They're a bunch of crooks who get rich off of causing people brain damage. I think most interesting is the 2004 study in the journal of Mental Health finding that 42% of patients reported that ECT led to decreased intelligence. The study also found that there's no overlap between clinical and consumer studies as to benefit. And what that means is that ECT researchers are lying about its effectiveness. When neutral third parties interview post-ECT patients months later, the "effectiveness" stats have no correlation to what these ECT researchers are reporting in their studies. They lie. They lie because they get rich from it. Money is the root of all evil. Think doctors wouldn't do such a thing? Think again.
