Hand-weaving exhibits on display tomorrow
Hong Kong (HKSAR) - The Art Promotion Office (APO) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, supported by The Salvation Army, initiated the "SAORI Hand-weaving Project" and organised hand-weaving workshops during 2008-09. To give the public an opportunity to appreciate the works created by the participants of the workshops, an exhibition "Weaving Into Nature”VSAORI Hand-weaving Exhibition" organised by the APO will be held at Kwun Yum Garden at Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden from tomorrow (November 7) to January 3, 2010. The exhibition will showcase eight pieces of hand-weaving works and "One-One Weaving Looms" and a large weaving loom will be set up in the gallery to share with visitors the pleasure of weaving.
The 2008-09 workshops were held at the Parents' Resources Centre and Sheltered Workshops of the SAHK, introducing SAORI to rehabilitation groups and parents of children with special needs. The Art Promotion Office also worked with the Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden and organised several "Weaving Into Nature" day-trips for members of The Salvation Army Rehabilitation Services and SAHK. Participants used various natural ingredients for dyeing cloth and yarn, while joining in the fun of weaving in enjoyable natural surroundings.
SAORI is a hand-weaving art form originating from Japan. It encourages the weavers to break from the traditional weaving techniques and to freely express themselves. By using an array of fabric yarns of various colours and textures, the weavers can demonstrate their individuality through free-style weaving.
SAORI places an emphasis on the beauty of being different, encouraging participation by people of various levels of ability, through which a philosophy of mutual appreciation, tolerance and respect is embodied. Through the introduction of the project and exhibition, the APO hopes to raise public awareness of this art form and the rationale behind it. After this exhibition, the APO will organise another SAORI exhibition, entitled "The Joy of Weaving”VSAORI Hand-weaving Exhibition", at the Hong Kong Central Library in January featuring more SAORI works.
The Kwun Yum Garden of Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden is located at Lam Kam Road, Tai Po, New Territories, and is open from 9.30am to 4.30pm. Entry to Kadoorie Farm is not permitted after 4pm. The farm will be closed from 9.30am to 2pm, December 20, 12.45pm to 5pm, December 22 and 24, and 3pm to 5pm, December 31.For enquiries about the farm, please call 2483 7186.
