EESC urges institutions to boost EU commitments to the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen

The EESC has overwhelmingly adopted a draft resolution, entitled "No Turning back," for submission to the United Nations Climate Change Conference which is to be held in Copenhagen in December. The EESC also adopted several opinions reiterating its commitment on this issue.

The resolution 1 spells out the EESC's disappointment with the lack of progress in climate change negotiations and insists that the EU should honour its original commitment of a 30% reduction by 2020 and its recently endorsed long- term target of reducing emissions by 80% of 1990 levels by 2050.

"The economic and social crisis cannot be seen in isolation from the environment. A new European strategy should integrate the environmental objectives and a low-carbon economy, with the economic recovery strategy" stated EESC President Mario Sepi. Mr Sepi called for European Institutions and Member States to stand firm and to take a responsible stance vis-à-vis Conference participants. Joining their efforts both at European and international level, the resolution urges European leaders to endorse exemplary environmental measures as a tool for overcoming the economic and social crisis – these include CO2 emission reduction targets, innovation, education, vocational training and technological choices, conservation of natural resources and assistance for developing countries.

Several opinions such as on International Climate Finance and the general sustainable development strategy as well as on Eco-efficient Economy endorse the Committee's position.
