30th annual Christian Scholars Conference scheduled for June; Shanley, Gioia, Elkins explore faith and the arts

NASHVILLE (Jan. 29, 2010)—Doubt playwright and director John Patrick Shanley; Dana Gioia, the immediate past chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts; and James Elkins, a leading national art critic, will keynote the 30th annual Christian Scholars Conference at Nashville's (Tenn.) Lipscomb University, June 3-5.

"Beauty in the Academy: Faith, Scholarship & the Arts" is the theme for this interdisciplinary academic conference that draws more than 400 scholars from top universities across the nation. More than 75 paper-and-panel sessions will be convened including presentations by academicians Carl R. Holladay (Emory), Greg Sterling (Notre Dame), Victor Paul Furnish (SMU), Abe Malherbe (Yale), Robin Jensen (Vanderbilt) and David Edwin Harrell (Auburn).

The event explored faith and politics in 2008 and faith and narrative in 2009. This year's conference includes:

• A performance of Doubt with equity actors and a "talk back" with playwright Shanley;
• A luncheon with David Miller, director of the Princeton University Faith and Work Initiative, sponsored by the Lipscomb College of Business;
• Sessions with artists, authors, critics and filmmakers including Steve Taylor, Sarah Mason, Charlie Peacock, Craig Detweiller and David Dark; and
• A panel with investigative reporter and MacArthur Genius Award winner Jerry Mitchell, whose 20-year investigation into civil-rights-era crimes contributed to four high-profile convictions, and John Seigenthaler Sr ., a Kennedy staffer who experienced the Freedom Rides.

The mission of the Christian Scholar's Conference is to create and nurture an intellectual and Christian community that joins individuals and institutions to stimulate networks of scholarly dialogue and collaboration. Since moving to Lipscomb University and incorporating an interdisciplinary theme in 2008, the conference has more than doubled its attendance and number of sessions offered.

Past speakers include Shaun Casey, faith advisor to the Barack Obama presidential campaign; Jim Wallis, author of God's Politics; Marilynne Robinson, Pulitzer-Prize-winning author of Gilead; and Barbara Brown Taylor, author of An Altar in the World.

Cost is $160 before May 3 and $195 after, plus the cost of optional special events. On-campus housing is available for $90 single occupancy and $140 double occupancy. To register, go http://csc.lipscomb.edu or call 615.966.7609.
