Historical fashion show and lecture inspires young designers

Internationally renowned costume historian, Ivan Sayers, will address VCAD's fashion design students and invited guests on Wednesday, March 17, 2010. Sayers will be presenting "Costumes of the 20th Century" covering the changing trends and styles of fashion from the 1890s through to the 1990s.

Ivan Sayers is well known in Vancouver’s fashion community for his historical fashion shows and lectures. As curator for the Original Costume Museum Society, a group dedicated to preserving historical clothing from around the world, Sayers is able to bring expertise and humour to his presentations.
Not only will Ivan present an in-depth visual commentary covering this unique century of costume, but will also bring actual designer original garments from this period to teach students about changes in design in the past century.

“Ivan Sayers is a recognized authority on costume history,” said Anne Morris, Campus Director at VCAD. “His presentations are incredibly informative because he brings to each historical period his wealth of knowledge about garments and trends of the era under discussion. Our fashion students are very privileged to learn firsthand from world renowned experts such as Ivan.”

VCAD’s Fashion Design diploma program teaches students the skills they need to transform their creative ideas into beautiful garments. Students develop a solid foundation in the fundamentals of garment and apparel design, fashion merchandising, visual display techniques and fashion show.

VCAD also offers a diploma program in Marketing and Merchandising for Fashion, which introduces students to the fundamentals of the fashion industry, design and color theory, as well as standard software used in the industry. Students learn about the Canadian retailing industry, marketing, visual displays, event promotions and merchandising.
