FEMA: Federal Disaster Grants, Loans in Missouri Top $77 Million


Missourians affected by the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding have received $77,492,777 in approved disaster grants and loans, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the United States Small Business Administration.

It has been more than three months since the president declared a major disaster in Missouri for the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding between April 19 and June 6, 2011.

"Although the registration period for assistance to individuals closed August 26, FEMA continues to work with disaster survivors and remains active in Missouri, helping residents along the road to recovery," Federal Coordinating Officer Libby Turner said.

As of August 29, 2011, a total of $34,164,977 has been approved to eligible Missourians for housing, other needs and disaster unemployment assistance through FEMA disaster assistance programs ($20,325,125 in Housing Assistance, $13,789,857 in Other Needs Assistance and $49,995 in Disaster Unemployment Assistance).

SBA has approved $43,327,800 in low-interest disaster loans to homeowners, renters, business of all sizes and nonprofit organizations to fund repair or rebuilding efforts and cover the cost of replacing lost or disaster-damaged property.

To date, 9,899 disaster survivors have visited 27 different Disaster Recovery Centers and the Multi-Agency Resource Centers that served residents of Bollinger, Butler, Cape Girardeau, Carter, Dunklin, Howell, Jasper, Lawrence, McDonald, Mississippi, New Madrid, Newton, Pemiscot, Pettis, Phelps, Pulaski, Reynolds, Ripley, Scott, St. Francois, St. Louis, Stoddard, Stone, Taney and Wayne counties.

More than 4,700 Missourians have been counseled by FEMA mitigation specialists on rebuilding techniques at recovery centers, home improvement stores and community outreach events.

At the height of the disaster recovery, 83 Community Relations field specialists traveled door-to-door in disaster areas to speak with residents in their homes and at community meetings to identify disaster-related needs, visiting thousands of survivors and distributing thousands of fliers and other information in the wake of the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding.

FEMA Public Assistance has obligated $870,953 in designated counties for emergency protective measures and the repair, replacement, or restoration of disaster-damaged, publicly owned facilities and the facilities of certain private nonprofit organizations.

In Joplin:

FEMA has approved $53,421,741 in disaster grants and loans to survivors of the Joplin tornado. More than $19 million in disaster assistance has been approved by FEMA to help with housing and other needs. The SBA has approved more than $34 million in low-interest disaster loans for homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes and nonprofit organizations.

To date, 522 families have moved into temporary housing units provided by FEMA at two mobile home sites and 13 commercial mobile home parks.

To date, 7,288 disaster survivors have visited four Disaster Recovery Centers and the Multi-Agency Resource Center in Joplin. A total of 10,691 registrations for assistance have been made.

FEMA has obligated more than $154 million in mission assignments to other federal agencies in the Joplin response. More than 1.5 million cubic yards of debris was removed from Joplin by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, which also provided assistance to critical facilities, including schools, fire stations and St. John's Regional Medical Center.

More than 46,000 volunteers working in Joplin have been recorded by AmeriCorps, which managed a Volunteer Reception Center at Missouri Southern State University.
