Former City Health Worker Charged with Illegally Distributing Drugs

PHILADELPHIA—Maria Josey, 46, of Philadelphia, a former employee of the city of Philadelphia Department of Health, was arrested this morning on an indictment that charges her with distribution of controlled substances and misuse of a DEA registration number, via prescription pads, to obtain oxycodone, announced United States Attorney Zane David Memeger. An initial appearance is scheduled for today at 1:30. Josey was working as a clerk typist at a city health care center when, according to the indictment, between September 2009 and March 2010, she illegally distributed hundreds of Percocet, OxyContin, or Endocet tablets to persons known to the grand jury. The 26-count indictment further alleges that she knowingly and intentionally used the registration number issued to another person, via prescription pads, for the purpose of acquiring and obtaining oxycodone.

If convicted of all charges, Josey faces a maximum sentence of 312 years’ imprisonment, three years’ supervised release, a fine of up to $16.25 million, and a $2,600 special assessment. This case was investigated by the city of Philadelphia Office of Inspector General, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney A Nicole Phillips. An indictment or an information is an accusation.

A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
