Assault case at Hei Ling Chau Correctional Institution
Hong Kong (HKSAR) - Correctional officers stopped an assault case in Hei Ling Chau Correctional Institution today (January 14). Two inmates and an officer were injured in the incident.
The incident occurred at about 2pm, when a group of inmates were leaving the dining hall after lunch. One of the inmates, aged50, allegedly attacked another inmate, aged 30, in front with a piece of sharpened metal wire, causing injuries to his head.
Correctional officers immediately tried to stop the assailant but he put up vigorous resistance.
The assailant was eventually subdued after an officer applied OC foam on him.
The assailant, the victim and an officer injured in the incident were later sent to the centre hospital for medical treatment, where the victim was transferred to a government hospital for further treatment. He was found conscious at the time.
The case was reported to the Police for further investigation.
A spokesman for the department said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from causing harm to others. These measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."
The 50-year-old inmate is serving a sentence of 22 months for an offence of remaining in Hong Kong without authority, while the 30-year-old inmate is serving a sentence of six years for an offence of trafficking in dangerous drugs.
