Scotland: Mesh implant interim review published

Health Secretary Shona Robison today welcomed the publication of an interim report into the use of transvaginal mesh implant procedures.Responding to the report, Ms Robison said:“I welcome this interim report into the use of transvaginal mesh implants and the recommendations it puts forward.“I also want to pay tribute to the women of the Scottish Mesh Survivors Group. They have already contributed hugely to what has no doubt for them, been a difficult and painful process.

I want to reassure them their views have been heard. There is still much to do and I want them to be at the centre of the crucial work we now take forward, while we await the final report.“I want to be clear that our advice to boards around suspending the use of mesh remains in place. We need to see the final report before we consider any changes that could potentially be made.

And we also need to be confident the recommendations for improved safeguards have been agreed and implemented. “I have asked the Scottish Government led Expert Group, which includes members of the Scottish Mesh Survivors Group, to continue its work and to look carefully at this interim report’s recommendations around improved safeguards and how we may go about implementing them.“We know that these procedures, in some cases, can have serious consequences and life changing side effects – which is why we recently set up a helpline for those who are affected or are worried they may be. “I will say more about how we see the way forward when I discuss these issues at the petitions committee on Tuesday.”The Chairman of the Independent Review, Dr Lesley Wilkie, has said:“This report points the way forward for improving services for women in the treatment of these conditions.

The report recommends improvements in clinical governance ensuring above all that women with these conditions can be assured that the treatment which they receive within the NHS is evidence based, audited and likely to produce a good result.” Notes to editors Full interim report is available to read: Secretary Shona Robison will give the Scottish Government’s initial response to the Independent Review’s Interim Report during her appearance at the Public Petitions Committee on October 6.The final report in the use of transvaginal mesh implants will be published early next year and awaits the outcome of additional studies. The mesh implant helpline is available on Mondays between 4.30-6.30 pm and Thursdays between 9-11am on 07824537938.
