Speech by SCED at inauguration reception for International Affairs Committee of Federation of Hong Kong Industries

Hong Kong (HKSAR) -      Following is the speech by the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So, at the inauguration reception for the International Affairs Committee of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries (FHKI) today (March 20):

Professor Cheng (the Chairman of the FHKI, Professor Daniel Cheng), distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

It is my great pleasure to join you all here this evening to witness the inauguration of the International Affairs Committee of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries.

Franklin Roosevelt once said, "... in a changing world worthy institutions can be conserved only by adjusting them to the changing time." I believe the FHKI has taken a more progressive step by establishing this new Committee as it adjusts to changing times.

Hong Kong has long relied on our extensive global business ties in driving our economy forward. In a world where sentiments against the open market and free trade are fast rising, it is even more imperative for us, an open economy with very little natural resources, to foster closer ties with our trading partners. We need to explore more business opportunities by tapping new markets.

Thanks to the FHKI, this new Committee will help our industries expand their international network and connections. It will help our businesses seize the emerging economic opportunities presented by, for example, the Belt and Road Initiative.

We are now facing unprecedented changes and challenges in the world market. We must reposition ourselves, identify our niche and sharpen our competitive edge to stay in the game. I am proud to say that the FHKI and our industrialists possess many enviable qualities which can stand the test of time, such as their courage, vision and perseverance.

Like the anchor of a ship, I am sure these are the virtues that will continue to keep Hong Kong afloat even in an ever changing environment.

Again, my sincere congratulations to the FHKI on the establishment of the International Affairs Committee. With the continued hard work of all the business talents here tonight, I am confident that our city will continue to flourish and gain increasing importance worldwide.

     Thank you.
