Media Alert: Bail Bonds Are a Fast Way Out of Jail in Los Angeles
Anyone arrested in Los Angeles, unless something very unusual happens, has the right to a bond that will get them out of jail.
"A lot of people think Los Angeles bail bond charges are set by the bondsman. Not sure. State law sets how much the bondsman can charge and the other fees associated with a bond," said Roger Sayegh, owner of Los Angeles Bail Bonds by Roger Sayegh.
At the same time, the state holds every California bail bonds man to a set of ethics and code of conduct. These rules vary from state to state, but in very case they are there to assure the person needing a bond gets a reasonable rate and is not cheated.
"Our books can be checked by state auditors. If they find something wrong, then we can be fined or worse," Mr. Sayegh said. "We have to operate according to the law."
So what makes the bondsmen different? Mr. Sayegh said it is attention to the things not covered under the law. He points to his company's years of experience and dedication to justice. Among the services his company provides is an understanding of the bond system and whether or not posting a bond is a good idea right then.
"We're going to make sure you understand what you are agreeing to," he said. "Then we're going to take a look at your situation and advise you about what you need to do with a bond."
Another factor, out of control of the bail bondsman, is when the bail gets posted.
"We have no control over this. If you are arrested at 11 p.m ., yes we may be able to post your bail, but it may be the next day before you are released," he said. Delayed bail is also very common in Under the Influence charges. The jail has to be certain you are not under the influence any longer before you are released."
Roger Sayegh offers 24-hour bail bonds, with the understanding that the court or the jail may put a temporary hold on the release.
