ICAO Secretary General visits Civil Aviation Department
Hong Kong (HKSAR) - The Secretary General of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Dr Fang Liu, visited the headquarters of the Civil Aviation Department (CAD) today (July 12).
Dr Liu was briefed by representatives of the CAD on its main duties and daily operations and visited the Aerodrome Simulator, which is used for Air Traffic Control Officer training purposes.
She commended the CAD for actively implementing and promoting the ICAO's measures and initiatives. She noted that Hong Kong has been actively participating in ICAO meetings and activities over the years, and that CAD officers have chaired many different sub-groups or regional meetings and provided many valuable comments to help the ICAO formulate guidelines on different technical issues. Hong Kong has also taken a pioneering role in implementing ICAO initiatives, such as the Hong Kong Safety Programme which helps enhance aviation safety awareness and foster co-operation in the aviation industry, and various new technologies in the Global Air Navigation Plan, the Asia/Pacific Seamless Air Traffic Management Plan and the Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme Continuous Monitoring Approach, as well as the establishment of an independent accident investigation authority and more.
The Director-General of Civil Aviation, Mr Simon Li, told Dr Liu that the CAD will continue to take forward different initiatives promulgated by the ICAO.
The CAD will work with the ICAO to enhance aviation safety and efficiency and facilitate the sustainable development of the aviation industry, he said.
The main purpose of Dr Liu's visit to Hong Kong is to attend the ICAO Traveller Identification Programme Regional Seminar, which has been co-organised by the ICAO and the CAD and is being held at the CAD's headquarters from July 11 to 13.
