Twenty-four students awarded Multi-faceted Excellence Scholarships

Hong Kong (HKSAR) -      The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah, today (October 10) officiated at the presentation ceremony of the Multi-faceted Excellence Scholarship and commended 24 scholarship recipients with talents in non-academic fields.

To foster a culture of multi-faceted excellence, the Home Affairs Bureau (HAB) launched the Multi-faceted Excellence Scholarship in late 2014 to support local universities and tertiary institutions in admitting local undergraduate students who excel in sports, arts and/or community services.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Lau said, "The Multi-faceted Excellence Scholarship has been well received since its launch and has achieved its objectives. This year, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has injected $200 million into the Scholarship in a bid to further promote multi-faceted excellence and multiple pathways. Starting from next year, the number of offers for the Scholarship each year will be doubled from around 20 to around 40.

The scholarship recipients have achieved outstanding performance, such that the Government has injected additional funding in order to encourage more students to apply." Mr Lau pointed out that the Multi-faceted Excellence Scholarship highlights that academic achievement is not the only criterion for excellence. He encouraged young people to explore and develop their potential in different areas.

He added that the Home Affairs Bureau has also sponsored other exchange and internship programmes. He expressed the hope that young people could seize the opportunities and proactively participate in these programmes.

The Multi-faceted Excellence Scholarship applicants are nominated by their secondary school principals.

After selection, the assessment panel comprising representatives from various social sectors recommends candidates for admission by universities and tertiary institutions. If deemed necessary, the universities may conduct interviews with the selected candidates. The universities give conditional offers to the selected candidates that they intend to admit before the release of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination results.

If nominees attain HKDSE results that meet the admission conditions and are subsequently admitted for the undergraduate programmes they have applied for, they are awarded the scholarship.
