Jessica McIntyre: The Benefits of EMDR Therapy

Most people have never heard of EMDR or the benefits that come from this kind of treatment.

In short, "EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences," says the EMDR Institute.

What makes this non-invasive therapy so beneficial is the speed with which is delivers results.

The internationally known Mayo Clinic lists EMDR as a proven therapy to help people overcome post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While PTSD is commonly discussed in connection with war veterans, it can affect anyone.

The EMDR Institute points to more than 30 controlled studies on EMDR. "Some of the studies show that 84%-90% of single-trauma victims no longer have post-traumatic stress disorder after only three 90-minute sessions.

Another study, funded by the HMO Kaiser Permanente, found that 100% of the single-trauma victims and 77% of multiple trauma victims no longer were diagnosed with PTSD after only six 50-minute sessions. In another study, 77% of combat veterans were free of PTSD in 12 sessions,"

LA psychotherapist and EMDR therapist says she has personally seen people recover from serious stress-related trauma after just a few sessions.

"Emotional trauma is not like a physical injury. There is nothing to see, no physical wounds that may scar and no antibiotics to use to chase the disease away," she said. "EMDR finds the hidden wounds that no one can see, but the person suffering can feel just as acutely as a cut. EMDR helps these people heal that emotional wound."

Success in this goal is usually indicated by the minimization and then reversal of the accompanying helplessness, confusion or low self-esteem that seems to be prevalent here in Los Angeles!
