Good Employer Charter to promote employee-oriented and progressive good people management
Hong Kong (HKSAR) - The Acting Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Caspar Tsui, attended the Kick-off Ceremony cum Seminar of the Good Employer Charter held by the Labour Department today (December 1). He appealed to employers of various trades and scales to adopt employee-oriented and progressive good people management practices for cultivating a good people management culture in the workplace.
Mr Tsui noted in his speech that hard-working and adaptable employees are valuable social assets in Hong Kong, but they need to be paired with good employers to realise their maximum efficacy. The implementation of employee-oriented good people management by enterprises is conducive to fostering co-operation and mutual trust among employees and employers, enhancing staff’s sense of belonging towards companies, attracting talent and improving productivity, thereby achieving a win-win situation for both parties, he said.
He added that the Good Employer Charter is a highly meaningful campaign. It provides all employers with a clear framework to shape and characterise their good people management strategies and practices in accordance with their own business and its size. In addition, the Good Employer Charter enhances co-operation and mutual trust among employees and employers, which allows them to reach consensus on different matters in a rational and mutual understanding manner.
He also said that the more employers subscribe to the Good Employer Charter, the more co-operative and mutual-trusting work conditions will be made available to employees, and the more harmonious the workplace will be.
Mr Tsui, together with the representatives of supporting organisations and members of the Panel of Judges, officiated at the launch ceremony of the charter today. In the ensuing seminar, two members of the Panel of Judges, Professor Carlos Lo and Mr David Li, shared with participants some of the key requirements of good people management, such as people-orientation and progressiveness.
The Labour Department has launched the Good Employer Charter to encourage employers to develop an enlightened corporate culture, introduce employee-caring employment measures and promote a work-family/work-life balance, and maintain good communications with employees or their associations for a harmonious labour relationship.
