Redhill Peninsula demolition work contractor convicted for illegal disposal of construction waste following report from public

Hong Kong (HKSAR) -      Kam Kong Materials & Engineering Limited, the contractor for the demolition work of Redhill Peninsula, illegally disposed of construction waste and was fined $3,000 by Eastern Magistrates' Courts today (January 8) for contravening the Waste Disposal Ordinance (WDO).

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) received a report from a member of the public that construction waste was illegally deposited on the pavement outside Redhill Peninsula at Pak Pat Shan Road, Tai Tam. The EPD traced the contractor involved according to the vehicle information provided by the public. The contractor explained that the construction waste generated from the demolition work at the housing estate was temporarily placed at the area, pending delivery to a proper disposal facility.

Upon investigation and evidence gathering, the EPD confirmed that the contractor had violated the WDO and subsequently prosecuted the company concerned. The department also followed up with the property management company (PMC) of the housing estate and requested the PMC to strengthen its management of renovation contractors to ensure that the construction waste generated from the estate would be properly handled.

An EPD spokesman reminded members of the construction and the transportation sectors that they should dispose of construction waste properly in accordance with the law and should not place such waste at public places. Under the WDO, it is an offence to dispose of waste in a public place or on government land or without the permission of the land owners.

First-time offenders are liable to a maximum fine of $200,000 and six months' imprisonment.
