Blood donor centres extend service hours under severe blood shortage

Hong Kong (HKSAR) - The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service (BTS) today (February 1) urgently appealed to members of the public to donate blood since the inventories for all blood types have been depleted to an alarming level. More donors are required to maintain a normal supply for clinical transfusion to patients.

The spokesperson said that although urgent appeals have been made twice in January, there were no significant rebounds in the number of blood donations. The number of blood donors has not reached the daily target of 1,100 for a very long period of time, resulting in the dangerous level of blood inventories.

Due to the continuous cold weather, a further drop in blood collections is forecast. The BTS urges all sectors of the community to support blood donation immediately by taking action. Blood donors who are travelling overseas during the Chinese New Year holiday are invited to donate before their trip.

Starting from tomorrow (February 2) to Sunday (February 4), the service hours of the Causeway Bay, Tsuen Wan and Kwun Tong Donor Centres will be extended to 9:30pm to facilitate blood donation by members of the public.
