Correctional officers combat illicit activity
Hong Kong (HKSAR) - The Correctional Services Department (CSD) collects intelligence, keeps the activities of persons in custody under close supervision and adopts appropriate measures to combat the illicit activities in penal institutions. Tong Fuk Correctional Institution received intelligence in late January that it was suspected some persons in custody attempted to organise illicit activities. The institutional management at once closely monitored the activities of the targeted persons in custody and strategically deployed manpower to handle any emergency incidents. At 11am and around 4.33pm yesterday (February 5), fights took place at a Laundry Workshop and in a Dining Hall respectively.
Thirteen male persons in custody, aged between 22 and 32, were involved in the fights. Officers at the scene immediately took action to stop the fights. A correctional officer sustained injuries to his shoulder and wrist when stopping the assault whilst one of the persons in custody sustained injuries to his head and hand. After examination and treatment by the medical officer in the institution hospital, both were transferred to public hospitals for further treatment.
The persons in custody concerned were removed from association and put under investigation. The case has been reported to the Police for investigation.
This morning (February 6), the Quality Assurance Division deployed officers of Security Section, with the concerted effort of the Regional Response Team and Dog Unit, to carry out search operation as planned on the targeted locations and persons in custody at Tong Fuk Correctional Institution. At the moment, 12 persons in custody suspected of having involved in illicit activities are being removed from association and put under investigation.
The atmosphere at Tong Fuk Correctional Institution is currently stable. The CSD will continue to closely monitor any developments and the activities of the persons in custody concerned
Tong Fuk Correctional Institution is a medium security prison for the detention of male adult persons in custody.
