Violinist Yang Xiaoyu to perform with Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra in March

Hong Kong (HKSAR) -      The Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra will collaborate with the highly acclaimed Chinese violinist Yang Xiaoyu for two concerts in March.

The concerts, entitled "Yang Xiaoyu plays Violin Classics", will be held at 8pm on March 17 (Saturday) at the Auditorium of Tsuen Wan Town Hall and at 3pm on March 18 (Sunday) at the Auditorium of Tuen Mun Town Hall.

Yang will play two violin solo pieces to start the concerts, namely John Corigliano's "The Red Violin Caprice" (March 17 only) and Heinrich Ernst's "Grand Caprice on Der Erlkönig" (March 18 only). Under the baton of guest conductor Andrew Ling, the orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky's "Symphony No. 5" to mark the 125th anniversary of the composer's death, and will join Yang in performing Sibelius' "Violin Concerto in D minor".

Founded by Dr Yip Wai-hong, the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra is a highly organised ensemble which aims to promote music for the enjoyment of the general public, especially Hong Kong's young generation.

Through popular music and concert talks, the orchestra has successfully introduced serious music and Chinese orchestral music to the public, arousing greater interest of the classical music.

Born to a family of artists in Harbin, China in 1986, Yang Xiaoyu started playing violin at the age of 5. He won first prize in the violin section of the 4th International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians when he was 16. A highly versatile and talented solo, orchestra and ensemble performer, Yang is also concertmaster of the China National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra.

"Yang Xiaoyu plays Violin Classics" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
