EPD makes successful prosecutions against four fly-tipping cases at Ma Fung Ling Road in Yuen Long
Hong Kong (HKSAR) - A renovation company, two lorry drivers and a lorry owner involved in four fly-tipping cases at Ma Fung Ling Road in Yuen Long were fined a total of $21,000 by Fanling Magistrates' Courts today (February 13) for contravening the Waste Disposal Ordinance (WDO).
The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) received a report from a member of the public in July last year, saying that illegal dumping of construction and commercial waste was easily spotted on the government land near Evergreen Place at Ma Fung Ling Road in Yuen Long. Surprise inspections were conducted by the EPD's enforcement officers to follow up on the complaint. During the blitz operation, four lorries were caught carrying commercial and industrial waste including unwanted furniture and broken refrigerators for illegal dumping.
After gathering evidence, the EPD subsequently prosecuted the people involved in these four cases, including lorry drivers, a lorry owner and a renovation company, in accordance with the WDO. To further combat illegal waste disposal at the area, the government land concerned has been enclosed. Warning signs have also been erected to remind the public that illegal waste disposal is prohibited.
The EPD spokesperson reminded renovation and construction workers and members of the transportation and logistics sector that construction and demolition waste as well as commercial waste should be delivered to the Government's waste treatment facilities for proper disposal in accordance with legal requirements.
Those who dispose of waste in public places and on the roadside will be prosecuted. First-time offenders under the WDO are liable to a maximum fine of $200,000 and six months' imprisonment.
