DH holds World Oral Health Day publicity event
Hong Kong (HKSAR) - The Department of Health (DH) today (March 11) held the World Oral Health Day together with Love Teeth Campaign and Healthy Ageing in Public Rental Housing Estates Activity Day. Under the theme of "Say Ahh: Think Mouth, Think Health", the activity aimed at promoting oral health awareness to the public to tie in with the World Dental Federation's global oral health appeal.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Consultant-in-Charge, Dental Service of the DH, Dr Wiley Lam, reminded the public to adopt good oral hygiene habits as early as possible. He said, "The public should be well aware that oral health and general health are closely related.
Oral problems such as dental decay and gum diseases share some common risk factors with other systemic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and cancer. These risk factors include poor personal hygiene, smoking and unhealthy eating habits."
The DH holds the annual Love Teeth Campaign to promote good oral self-care and appropriate use of professional oral care to the public. Since 2016, the department has conducted an oral health programme for the elderly tenants in public housing estates in collaboration with the Hong Kong Housing Authority (HA) by incorporating an oral health element into the Healthy Ageing in Public Rental Housing Estates programme run by the HA.
Over the past two years, more than 1 000 elderly tenants from various public housing estates attended six oral health talks with games and workshops under the programme organised by the Oral Health Education Unit (OHEU) of the DH. In addition, the DH has trained up a total of 41 Senior Patron Angels, who are enthusiastic senior volunteers from public housing estates, to assist dental professionals to promote oral care skills and healthy lifestyle among the elderly tenants.
The public can visit the website of the DH's OHEU for more information on oral health (http://www.toothclub.gov.hk/en/en_index.html" target="_blank">www.toothclub.gov.hk/en/en_index.html).
