Job Description:
CNET’s Download.com engineering group is seeking an experienced Software Engineer to help create the next generation of Web 2.0 services and applications. Download.com serves over 200 million pages per month. Expanding our offering with state of the art services represents a daunting engineering challenge with significant opportunity for the right individual.

Success in this role will require an individual with strong skills and drive. The right candidate will have experience with the back-end infrastructure required to run a 24/7/365 site that serves an extreme volume of traffic. They’ll have been part of a team that’s delivered quality software on time. It’ll take more than just coding skills to excel at this position – communication is incredibly important as this engineer will often be working directly with their business partner.

Specific responsibilities of this role:
· Implement features based upon requirements and specs. Make decisions on how best to create new features and be able to describe trade-offs. Interact with engineering lead as well as Product Managers to understand current and future business requirements.
· Work independently at times creating specific features as defined. Be able to accurately break down tasks, provide estimates and report status.
· Be a productive team member, communicating well and working closely with other engineers to subdivide and complete complicated tasks.

Specific requirements of the ideal candidate:
· 3 years of software development experience, with an emphasis on the infrastructure required to support dynamic Web-based systems
· Java and JSP 2.0 expertise, with an ability to build around specific performance targets
· Spring and Hibernate experience mandatory; Struts, Sitemesh, and Spring Webflow a big plus
· Working knowledge of advanced javascripting technologies, such as AJAX, JSON, and the latest popular libraries (prototype, mootools, etc.)
· Background working with XML and XML-related tools (XML binding and parsing)
· MySql database experience and Lucene-based index building
· Working knowledge of UNIX development environments, preferably Redhat Linux
· Proficient with software version control, build and deployment technologies, (CVS, Ant, CruiseControl, RPM…)
· Understanding that coding is only one part of the job – designing and testing are just as important
· Self-motivated and willing to take ownership
· Strong and effective communication skills with both business and technical staff
