Harvard University Division of Continuing Education: Web Designer/Developer

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with design, code, and development of all Harvard University Division of Continuing Education public websites.
  • Implement design comps using expert CSS, JavaScript, and clean markup, testing and debugging as needed to ensure that sites are consistent across browsers and accessible to the widest number of users and devices.
  • Serve as liaison with the MIS department to address server performance issues and programming updates.
  • Create and maintain a variety of Flash and multimedia features.
  • Coordinate usability testing initiatives and subsequent improvements to DCE websites.
  • Monitor Google Analytics and reports on traffic trends. Maintain the internal Google search engine.
  • Support the portal and course websites using the Harvard iCommons platform. Support DCE blogs using WordPress.
  • Stay current on standards for web usability, design, coding, CSS, scripting languages, browser compatibility, and accessibility issues, with flexibility for learning new skills as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, with 3-5 years of experience in web design and production.
  • Expert-level, hand-coded XHTML/CSS and strong commitment to web standards.
  • Knowledge of an embedded scripting language (JSP, PHP, etc.), JavaScript (MooTools, jQuery), and dynamic templating systems. Familiarity with Photoshop and Flash.
  • Strong visual design skills and an eye for typography, whitespace, and other details that occur at the intersection of traditional design and code.
  • Experience taking sites from design comp to launch.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects independently: take initiative, draft proposals, set deadlines, provide regular progress reports, ensure that projects stay on track.
  • Ability to conceptualize and articulate ideas for new or enhanced designs and interactive capabilities, and to communicate and collaborate effectively with a team to carry them out.
  • Must be well organized, detail oriented, able to work in a fast-paced environment with high standards for quality and accuracy.

This position is located in Cambridge, MA and requires working full time on site.
