Summary

 

This position will develop and support PNCA's new image database catalog system and Web-based interface.  Position will work closely and collaboratively with Director of Library Services and Information Technology and Archives Librarian in a team-based environment. The candidate must able to provide leadership and initiative in developing the technical aspects of this system and be able to communicate well with the various constituents of the College. This position is grant supported for one year. The College will actively seek ways of continue and expand this appointment to include developing new web applications and administrative databases using third-party and Open Source systems.

 

Responsibilities

 

Work with Head and Technical Librarians and IT staff to customize the image database to create a digital image database to support PNCA teaching and learning initiatives. Communicate with image database user community, technical support, guidance committee and faculty database users to refine and customize database, image viewer and Web interface.

 

Qualifications

 

Thorough understanding of SQL architecture, modeling and speed optimization routines. Deep knowledge of MySQL is essential. Some MsSQL will be helpful. PostgreSQL is a bonus.  Deep understanding of Ruby and PHP web scripting languages. Experience using the Ruby on Rails application framework to build and deploy at least one production web application. Knowledge of server-side multi-media processing libraries, including alternatives for audio/video transcoding and image conversion. Deep understanding of Ruby and PHP web scripting languages. The ideal candidate excels with Ruby on Rails, but understands that legacy systems and the various needs of a college mandate time spent using other languages to accomplish goals.

 

Min. Qualifications

 

Proficiency installing, configuring and managing Unix and/or Linux-based web servers to run Rails and PHP-based web applications, including a knowledge of web serving alternatives, process management and code deployment routines. Experience using source control systems to manage code development in a team. SVN required, Git knowledge helpful. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Effective team player. Ability to take initiative and lead in project programming efforts.

 

Desirable Qualifications:

 

Experience with OCLC, CONTENTdm and/or DSpace, open source software and zoomify.
