W. W. Norton &Co.: Interaction Designer
(New York, NY) W. W. Norton & Company is the oldest and largest publishing house owned wholly by its employees.
We are looking for an energetic Interaction Designer to join our electronic media department. The candidate must be a creative self-starter that pays attention to detail, has a passion for user experience, and has strong web design skills. The work will involve content-rich interactive websites and applications intended primarily (but not exclusively) for college students and instructors.
The position is based in New York City.
Responsibilities:
- Work with business stakeholders to define a project’s business and user requirements. - Conduct research to understand customers, such as heuristic evaluations, contextual inquiry and task-based usability tests. - Communicate the context of use to development team and stakeholders through creation of personas and use-case scenarios. - Employ user-centered design process to create detailed sitemaps, flows, wireframes and prototypes. - Collaborate with project stakeholders and development teams to ensure final products retain their user focus. - Coordinate user testing and reviews before, during, and after product launch to inform internal design and development practices. - Keep current on user experience design research and advocate user experience within the print and digital domains throughout the company. - Create compelling designs that meet in-house style guidelines. - Design quality products in a compressed timeframe under tight deadlines.
Qualifications:
- Core comprehension of User Centered Design Process - Proficiency in diagramming software, such as Visio, Axure, or Omnigraffle, used to create wireframes, prototypes, and other interaction design specifications - Thorough understanding of web standards and web 2.0 interfaces and functionality - Front-end web development skills (HTML/CSS/JavaScript/Flash) - A Bachelor’s degree in Information Design, Graphic Design, Visual Arts or relevant professional experience - A portfolio that demonstrates interaction and interface design competency - A flair for creating clean, clear design, with elegant use of typography - Experience with college publishing is a plus
The Candidate:
The ideal candidate will balance creative problem solving with the ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects. The position requires exceptional organizational skills and an openness to creative direction, while also taking ownership of design projects from conception to release. About two thirds of the job will involve user experience analysis and one third design production. The candidate must have a collaborative spirit that allows for effective working relationships with teams. Those teams will include digital and print designers, programmers, electronic media editors, book editors, production staff, and freelance developers.
