W. W. Norton & Company is the oldest and largest publishing house owned wholly by its employees.

We are seeking a talented web designer to work in the electronic media department. The web designer will craft elegant, clear designs for web sites that support our distinguished list of college textbooks. The ideal candidate will combine a collaborative spirit with self direction, attention to detail, and a flair for design.

Responsibilities:

• Guide design process of web sites and multimedia projects

• Work closely with Creative Manager and Project Manager to complete multiple sites with developers and freelancers

• Set guidelines for, and oversee the site development with, developers

• Collaborate with editors to effectively present educational content using the web

Qualifications:

• Relevant BFA / AAS degree associated with art/design, or equivalent work experience in web design

• A strong portfolio with emphasis on interface design

• Emphasis on clean, clear design and typography

• Front-end web development skills (HTML/CSS/JavaScript/Flash)

• Understanding of web application development (ASP.NET familiarity a strong plus)

• Effective writing and communication skills

• Ability to come up with creative solutions to complex problems

• Ability to wear more than one hat

• Produce quality products in a compressed timeframe under tight deadlines

• An in-depth understanding of rich internet application technologies

• Can take creative direction but can also take ownership of a project from concept to production

• Strong organizational skills
