Upstatement is looking for an ambitious and talented web developer to join our team. We want someone who has experience with modern web tools and feels just as comfortable talking to people as they do to servers.

First, a little about us. Our shop conceives, designs, and builds top notch web sites, apps, and mobile experiences for some great clients, (like Harvard, MIT, and One Laptop per Child … but more on that later). We work on projects from concept to completion and will expect you to contribute throughout the whole process.

In other words, this isn’t simply a back-end gig. While you should have excellent bedrock web development skills — HTML/CSS/JS/PHP  — we also need someone who's comfortable explaining complex concepts to laypeople without lecturing. Client relationship is a big part of what we do. We pride ourselves on being able to interface with our clients as human beings, not programmers.

If you can articulate interesting ideas and be creative with your code, that's a big plus. We value independent study and encourage personal projects, so if you've got a great idea for a web product or you've always wanted to build the great American iPhone app, we'll help. The person we hire will be an important member of our creative team, pitching concepts and trying out new techniques while delivering at the highest level.

The nuts and bolts:

• You must be comfortable developing with existing content management systems such as Wordpress and Drupal (you don't have to love them, but be comfortable working with them).
• PHP / MySQL
• JavaScript and associated frameworks: jQuery, Prototype etc.
• Expert in HTML/CSS (natch) and comfortable with emerging HTML5 / CSS3 techniques
• Well-versed in Web Standards and cross-platform accessibility
• Mobile development experience a plus
