Position Description WestEd is looking for a developer to join our Web Applications Group. You will work to help design and build interactive web applications for schools, districts, states and the federal government. As a member of a small development shop in a larger organization, you will be responsible for the design and implementation of software that touches millions of lives, develop in the full application stack and collaborate and interact with thought leaders in educational research and reform.

ResponsibilitiesThe developer will work directly with clients and project managers to gain a strong understanding of the problem domain, create working prototypes in Ruby on Rails, and iteratively refine the applications as they are built. They will work with the entire application stack, from database design to client-side Javascript. While we have designers on staff to do the heavy lifting, a working knowledge of markup and CSS is assumed.

QualificationsRequirements: * Have some code that you wrote and can share with us. It does not have to Ruby or Rails or even web-based, but it should be something that you are excited to share and talk to us about. * A passion to create and deliver working software. * Knowledge of a high-level scripting language (Ruby, Python, Perl, PHP.) We use mostly Ruby and Rails. * An understanding of web application development. * Some basic SQL experience. We mostly use MySQL. * A working knowledge of HTML and CSS. * Familiarity with the UNIX command line. * Great communication skills, both verbal and written. * Must be a US citizen or authorized to work (visa sponsorship not available). Desired: * Background with educators, researchers, or the larger education community. * Knowledge of any or all of these technologies: version control (Git), Javascript, Continuous Integration, TDD, Heroku. * Ability to do basic system administration and UNIX shell scripting. * Knowledge of database design.
