I've had the PS3 MGS package for only about a month now and here are my initial impressions (I bought this before the new 80gb was released and before the 160gb package was announced):
system
pros: great graphics, also a bluray player, comes with dualshock 3, comes with MGS4 ($60 value), free access to the playstation internet network, wifi receiver built in, free download of pain game, backwards compatibility
cons:
some games (even some on blueray discs) need to be downloaded, playstation still has the longest load times, no IR receiver on the system, expensive price
game:
I'm not done it yet (prob about half way through)
pros: so far has lived up to the hype and followed the true MGS tradition, improved controls, graphics are incredible, new online play
cons: storyline is as complicated as ever, some cut-scenes are way too long-you should be able to go back and view them when you have time later, tough game to put down (madden is getting jealous)
I'll update this with more details once I complete the game and have the system for a longer period of time
if you are definitely going to buy MGS4 and want backwards compatibility for PS2 and PS1 games then I would get this over the new 80gb version. Otherwise the new 80gig is probably for you.
Keep in mind these are hard to come by. |

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is a marvelous blend of video game and cinematic experience!! I have only played Sons of Liberty before and found it somewhat incomplete and limited in detail. But this game has combined cutting edge graphics, wonderful gameplay, endless weaponry options and a mesmorizing storyline beautifully complimented by one of the most moving and powerful musical scores ever in a videogame bar none!! This game not only captures the imagination but the flawless storyline and ending lift the human spirit through the rollercoaster of tragedy and triumph.
I purchased the 80GB Playstation 3 Metal Gear Solid Package over the Motorstorm package and I have been absolutely blown away!! Getting an 80GB Playstation 3 was wonderful in itself but getting a bundle with this incredible game included for $500.00 was an absolute treat!! I am overjoyed!! Thanks a million Sony!! You have done it again!!!

The 360 comes with a 3 year warranty, has more and better games and is better online. The PS3 is difficult and requires too many accounts to get online.
Obviously, I bought a PS3 from AMZN to rate this. So I own both and am inpartial. |

I'm not really much of a gamer, but wanted a future-proof Blu Ray player, and so far have been disappointed. When it works, it's a beautiful with great sound - just what you need for a big-screen TV. Unfortunately, in the five weeks I've had it, it's spent two weeks so far going back to Sony for repair, and it's heading back there again. When I first got it, it got 1/3 way through the first Blu-ray movie, then the picture started breaking up and quickly failed with some error codes that the disk could not be read. I tried all the suggestions on the Sony web site and finally had to go through the process of submitting an online problem report, waiting for them to send a "coffin", send it off to Sony, wait for it to show up, then wait at home for it to be delivered since it must be signed for in person by an adult upon delivery. Whotta pain.
Got the unit back and it worked for a week or so, but now it doesn't even see disks inserted in the drive. Time for a couple of more weeks of downtime for repairs and another day having to wait at home or going to UPS to sign for it. Sony's zero for two on this. Very disappointing. |

| I just bought this in the past few weeks just for the simple fact that I bought a new 52" Sony Bravia television and I wanted a blu-ray player to go with it. Boy was I in for a surprise! The game metal gear is not a game I have played for years but the graphics alone made this game one of my favorites of all time. I also own a wii, which now collects lots of dust and only my younger girls play the wii anymore. I've been a gamer for years and this is the console for the 20-and-up crowd. The wii is fun, but for pure gaming, the PS3 has no comparison. The 1080p graphics and BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY of PS2 games is also a huge plus! The only negative I have had with this console is that it does run hot, so don't enclose it in anything like a cabinet or anything. It puts out massive amounts of heat due to that cell processor running. Have not had any problems with overheating or anything, but stuff was getting warm that was placed around it. But overall, you will not be disappointed in this console. Now, off to try out Madden 09 on this....I can't wait! |
