It will take all of Bowers's instincts and training to stop this man who calls himself the Illusionist. And just when the pieces start to come together, Bowers realizes they're not quite adding up. Can he unravel the pattern and save the next victim? Or will the Illusionist win the game by taking one of his opponent's pieces? Thrilling, chilling, and impossible to put down, The Pawn will hold suspense lovers in its iron grip until the very last page.

A very nice debut: Rating: 3/5
The Pawn by Steven James is a multi faceted thriller. To start with, its hard not to notice that Alex Cross (a character created by the notorious James Patterson) is a Massive influence on this novel. Steven James structures this book using the early Cross books as a guide post. From the quick breezy writing style, the the main character, to the bad guys and story line, this is all old news.

Some aspects that let me down: First of all, Bowers has everything fall into place at every turn... its a little tricky trying to describe this, Im thinking of a comparison to 'Die Hard'. In the Movie, Willis is running around this skyscraper, and no matter where he is, whether its a setback or on the road to resolution, it doesn't diverge from the plot. Often, this is something that a reader/movie watcher will not notice. The author/director thinks of an idea maps it out one way and then fleshes out the narrative around it. 'the pawn' feels like a story that never allowed for itself to be broken and re-thought via another angle.

Another negative in my mind is that Bowers step daughter is too smart. For a seventeen year old kid, she knows arcane bits of knowledge, stats, and can correct obscure mis-quotations. This is a major character here, but she is very artificial. Also, what the heck is she doing here in the first place??? You know the situation she is going to end up in several hundred pages before she does. Its way too obvious.

On the other hand, this story is captivating. I said that I thought the Pawn relied waaaay to much on early Patterson. That being said, I think that Patterson himself has produced pretty much nothing but sub par efforts over the last two decades and I am happy to read a story modeled closely after him if just to be reminded about what I initially enjoyed about the Cross series.

Im very much looking forwards to reading the next couple books in this series.

Fast Paced Thriller: Rating: 5/5
Having met author Steven James a few years ago, I knew the first book in the Patrick Bowers series would be a good read. I had no idea it would be such a page turner. Detective Patrick Bowers in an FBI consultant and instructor who specializes in geospatial profiling. Working with a team of agents, he investigates a series of serial killings, a shady southern governor, and cultists with possible ties to...well, you'll have to read it for yourself. Everything comes together in a surprising and satisfying climax. If you like murder mysteries, if you like detective novels, if you like intense, fast paced thrillers, The Pawn will exceed your expectations. Highly recommended.

Excellent thriller: Rating: 5/5
This is a new author for me, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised that it was a great read. I will look for other books by this author.

A Very Pleasant Surprise: Rating: 5/5
When I started reading this book, I was not sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. The author made the characters three dimensional. The plot action was very good -- it kept me eager to continue reading to find out what happened next. I will definitely look for this author's next work.

PATRICK BOWERS BOOK # 1: Rating: 5/5
Ok, I am always behind. I really just started mysteries and I am trying all the heros and thanks to AMAZON recommendations, I gave THE PAWN by Steven James a try. Patrick Bower, FBI, is a really good hero. His forensic specialization sets him apart, even from his collegues. Some one else said and it is true, if you like CSI you will love this book. First of several for this hero and I can not wait for book # 2. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
